It is with our deepest regret that the Members and Officers of The Dushore Fire Co. No. 1; announce the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter William D. Thompson Sr. on June 18, 2009. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, June 24th at 11am; with internment in the Hill Crest Cemetery, New Albany.
William "Bill" D. Thompson Sr., 66, of New Albany, Pa., passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Towanda, Pa. He was born on May 2, 1943, in Pine Hill, N.J., a son of the late William E. and Betty Larson Thompson. On Jan. 16, 1964, Bill married Rita Haedrich in Feasterville, Pa. He had been a resident of Bradford County for 25 years, having moved from Bucks County. Bill was a self-employed plumber.
Bill held his community and civic duties very high, as he was active in many positions. He was a member of the New Albany Fire Co., Dushore Fire Co. & Ambulance Assoc.; the Lower South Hampton Fire Department, since age 16; and the Trevose Heights Rescue Squad. He also served as EMA Coordinator for Albany Township and New Albany Borough, and was the Vice President of the New Albany Borough Council. Bill enjoyed his time spent fishing and being in the outdoors.
Surviving are his wife: Rita Thompson, at home; his six children, Rita Thompson of Forksville, William Jr. of New Albany, Stephania Mulhollen of Granville Summit, Pa., Jackie (Scott) Hillyard of New Albany, Matthew Thompson of New Albany, and Danielle (Scott Lamphere) Thompson of Powell, Pa.; four sisters, Dot (Charles) Johnson, Carol Applegate, Gloria (George) Mongillo and Kathy (Toby) Horn; and eight grandchildren, Christopher and Cheyenne Heinze, Dakota Mulhollen, Austin, Anthony and Brienna Gowen, and Trey and Trent Lamphere.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, George Applegate.
We wish to thank the people of the communities we serve, our families and colleagues for their support and assistance this past week. Special thanks to the Fire Police Units and Personnel of the Franklindale Fire Co., Monroe Hose Company, Vigilant Engine Company, Wysox Fire Company and Wyalusing Fire Company. Also to Laporte Fire Company, Muncy Valley Fire Company, Forksville Fire Company, Eldredsville Fire Company, Mildred Fire Company, Pine Creek Independant Fire Company, New Albany Fire Company, Towanda Fire Company, Canton Fire Company, Sayre Fire Department, Lower Southampton Fire Dept., Tri-Hampton Rescue Squad, and everyone who sent letters and words of support and condolences.
