The First Resuscitator

It had been the recommendation of Dr. Theodore Saul; and local Civil Defense that the Fire Co. No. 1 buy a Resuscitator for two years. Members had been trained in the use of an Oxygen powered Resuscitator at a number of fire schools. At the April 1945 business meeting; William Gilmore, William F. Kast and Vell C. Holcombe were appointed to look into the purchase. A 1946 Model E & J was purchased, along with two large oxygen tanks. It could be used to give oxygen by means of Resuscitation, Inhalation; either by direct mask or an oxygen tent. It was also equipped with an oxygen powered aspirator.  Below, a unit of exact model can be seen. This unit lacks the necessary device to attach to a larger tank; however the fitting for such operation is present. The Resuscitator was credited with saving an untold number of lives all over Sullivan County, even stretching into neighboring counties. The cost of the unit was $450.
